A computer can be rendered unusable, when performing certain processes. Some applications tend to overuse the CPU, making the system work sluggishly. If you are more than a novice user, then you should know how to shut down unneeded processes. A better solution is to use Process Tamer. It works like the standard Windows Task Manager, but its enhanced capabilities allow you to prioritize background processes and set up various rules, to handle them automatically.

The installation file is roughly 3 MB. You can either run the file and go through a standard setup procedure or you can load the file in WinRAR or other ZIP-compatible archiving applications and extract the application's files manually. Although Process Tamer is free, you must create an online account, validate it and generate an activation key.

The application's compact interface displays running processes and a series of configuration options and logs on separate tabs. When viewing processes, you may click different check boxes, in the lower region of the interface, to show or hide old processes and items that use less than 1% of your CPU.

The software allows you to select different priorities, from low to realtime, for individual processes. You can also select explicit rules to ignore or kill specific processes or to force certain priorities. Rules and priorities can be selected from different drop menus. If you select a rule, the application will execute the action of your choice automatically. Selected rules are listed on the Configuration tab, where you can remove them or add new ones.

The Configuration tab includes numerous options, which can be used to adjust priorities manually, exclude processes and more. Besides targeting a third party application's executable and setting up various handling methods, you can set up a trigger, based on maximum and minimum CPU usage.

Pros

You can prioritize your running processes manually or set up various rules. The software can automatically kill or ignore processes or set up different priorities, based on your personal settings. Process Tamer is free, it can be installed rapidly and it is easy to use.

Cons

Unless you want to make a donation, you have to generate a new activation key every six months. Process Tamer gives you a better grip over your running processes. Thanks to its simple, but effective tools, your processor will not be overburdened by demanding applications.
